Dragon Quest  Enix1986The first part of what became a famous and beloved game series. This first part, however, is far from what MSX-users regard as good RPG's. It may be nice if you have the patience to play it through, but most players don't want to challenge all the Japanese texts because the game doesn't seem to be worth it anyway. labelimageminimize

Randar II: Revenge of Death Compile1989Randar II is a short RPG published in 1989 by Compile as a special DiskStation issue. The story is about a planet called Alkali, of which all the women mysteriously vanished. Space detective Randar sets out to solve the mystery and bring back the vanished women.
The game can be divided in four different sections. The first section consists of the villages and towns on the planets, where items and equipments can be bought and information can be gathered. The second section is the open field of the planet, which need to be explored. The third consists of a dungeon or cave and the fourth is the space map, where space travels can be made.
The battles are turn-based. Simple recovery items can be used, magic spells aren't incorporated in the game. Attacks can be made using either a sword or a gun.
An English translation of the game was made in 2000 by the MSX group Sargon.

Randar no Bouken  Kemsx (Compile)1989Randar 1 is a small RPG which was delivered as an extra game with a special edition of Compile's Disc Station. The game is almost entirely written in BASIC but it's speedy enough. The most interesting fact about this game is that it is the first part in the Randar-series, but probably also the least known.
Battles are turn-based. Various weapons and armours can be bought and equipped and various items can be used. Caves must be explored, item chests must be found.
The game takes place in a kingdom called Mamorth. You're of course the hero - Randar. Your task is to free Mamorth kingdom from the tiranny of Nesty Luba.

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes  Nihon Falcom1990An unofficial English translation of this conversion is circulating.***One of the best RPG's ever released for MSX2. A huge world map, many villages and towns, caves and towers to explore, countless items and weapons and a pretty good storyline. This is the first part of what became a new series afterwards: the Legend of Heroes series. The latest part in this series, part VI (Sora no Kiseki) was only released in 2005. labelimageminimize

Randar no Bouken III: Yami ni Miserareta Majutsushi  Compile1990The third and final part of the Randar series. Randar 1 and 2 were relatively small RPG's that came with Compile's diskmagazine Disc Station. Randar 3 is a stand-alone game of great quality. This is an extended RPG with huge maps, many locations to explore, items and weapons to be found and a great variety of monsters. Although the game hasn't been translated to English yet, the scenario is quite a good one. labelimagesubject
